Sally Ledger Bursary

The British Association for Victorian Studies has established an award to help UK graduate students (postgrads) attend the annual NAVSA conference. As part of each NAVSA conference, organizers evaluate submissions from UK postgraduate students to select the best proposal. After review of the conference committee's recommendation by NAVSA's President and Vice-President, one student is selected to receive the Sally Ledger Memorial Travel Bursary. The award is only made to a student whose application to NAVSA’s conference committee has been deemed successful in the competitive process to deliver a paper at the NAVSA event on the grounds of highest academic quality and relevance to the conference theme.

There is no separate application procedure for members wishing to be considered for the Sally Ledger Memorial Bursary. When accepting proposals from British postgraduate BAVS members, the conference committee will select a recipient for the Bursary, based on the best quality paper proposal. BAVS will inform the recipient of the award, which will be awarded formally at the NAVSA conference. The recipient will receive the bursary after the conference only if the student has attended and participated in the event.

The bursary is named in honour of the distinguished Victorianist and supporter of BAVS, Professor Sally Ledger, who died in 2009. In recognition of Sally’s commitment and dedication to her postgraduate students, the BAVS Executive decided to establish a fund in her honour.

Amount: £500.
