On September 28-30, 2012, the North American Victorian Studies Association (NAVSA) completed its tenth annual conference in Madison, Wisconsin. The conference was organized by Susan Bernstein, Caroline Levine, Mario Ortiz-Robles and Nancy Rose Marshall of the U of Wisconsin, Madison. The year of 2012 also saw our ninth year with a NAVSA panel at the Association of Canadian College and University Teachers of English (ACCUTE; May 28-31), a tradition we hope to continue every year. The 2012 panel was organized by Jennifer Esmail (Wilfred Laurier U). Lisa Surridge (U Victoria) will organize our panels for the 2013 ACCUTE conference, which will occur in Victoria, British Columbia. For news about the organization, see our 2013 winter newsletter.
2013 will be NAVSA's 10th anniversary and we are celebrating in part with two conferences: a first, supernumerary conference in Venice, Italy will be run jointly with BAVS and AVSA, June 3-6 (CFP deadline is now past, Venice pictured above); our regular conference will occur in Pasadena, California from Oct. 23-27 and will be run by Kate Flint, Anne Helmreich, Erika Rappaport, and Amy Woodson-Boulton (co-chairs).
If you are not yet a member, we encourage you to join. Note that regular membership costs only a few dollars more than a Victorian Studies subscription, which is one of the benefits of membership. Also, student, unaffiliated, and retired members receive a subscription to Victorian Studies for much less than the advertised cover price. Members may attend our annual conference and will benefit from other resources and initiatives (a graduate-student award for best essay at the annual conference; the password-protected NAVSA Directory and members-only web space; and a web-based archive for Victorian scholarship and pedagogy that we are aiding to establish, named NINES or Networked Infrastructure for Nineteenth-century Electronic Scholarship). NAVSA members also receive a 30% discount at both Oxford UP and Ohio UP on almost a thousand titles of interest to Victorianists. NAVSA maintains a listserv to keep members informed of NAVSA business. To share news from other organizations, we also maintain a twitter feed and a blog, which can be accessed by anyone.
