CFP: NeMLA 2017: “The Art of the Misfit” (9/30/2016; 3/23-26/2017)

NeMLA"The Art of the Misfit"
2017 NeMLA Conference
Baltimore, Maryland
March 23-26, 2017

This panel invites abstracts to discuss the character of the misfit in Victorian literature. What constitutes a misfit? Though these characters seem to invite negative associations, is it possible to use the modern perspective, or even the Victorian perspective, to reconsider their purpose? How does gender, class, ethnicity, vocation, etc. affect the perception of these characters? Consider what these character have to tell about their authors' sensibilities or the period overall. Papers are invited to examine the non-traditional, unexpected, and strange constructions the misfit found in the period's writings. Please submit a 250-300 word abstract and brief bio by September 30, 2016 to the NeMLA website: http://www.buffalo.edu/nemla.html.
